I printed this out last year and thought i'd type it out and post. More to come.  I original source is unknown to me..but I printed this from another message board.

Here is an overview of the detoxification stages during a juice fast. The time periods are a general estimation.

Stage 1 (Day 1 To Day 2)
On the first day of fasting, the blood sugar level drops below 70 mg/dl. To restore the blood to the normal glucose level, liver glycogen is converted to glucose and released into the blood. This reserve is enough for half a day. The body then reduces the basal metabolic rate (BMR). The rate of internal chemical activity in resting tissue is lowered to conserve energy. The heart slows and blood pressure is reduced. Glycogen is pulled from the muscle causing some weakness. The first wave of cleansing is usually the worst.

Headaches, dizziness, nausea, bad breath, glazed eyes and a heavily coated tongue are signs of the first stage of cleansing. Hunger can be the most intense in this period unless the enema is used which quickly assists the body into the fasting state by ending digestion in the colon.

Stage 2 (Day 3 To Day 7)
Fats, composed of transformed fatty acids, are broken down to release glycerol from the gliceride molecules and are converted to glucose. The skin may become oily as rancid oils are purged from the body. People with problem-free skin may have a few days of pimples or even a boil. A pallid complexion is also a sign of waste in the blood. Ketones are formed by the incomplete oxidation of fats. It is suspected that the ketones in the blood suppress the appetite by affecting the food-satiety center in the hypothalamus. You may feel hungry for the first few days of the fast. This effect is temporary. The desire to eat will disappear. Lack of hunger may last 40 to 60 days, depending on whether you are on water or juice.

The body embraces the fast and the digestive system is able to take a much-needed rest, focusing all of its energies on cleansing and healing. White blood cell and immune system activity increases. You may feel pain in your lungs. The cleansing organs and the lungs are in the process of being repaired. Periodically, the lymphatic system expels mucoid matter through the nose or throat. The volume excreted of this yellow-colored mucus can be shocking. The sinuses go through periods of being clogged, then will totally clear. The breath is still foul and the tongue coated. Within the intestine, the colon is being repaired and impacted feces on the intestinal wall start to loosen.

Stage 3 (Day 8 to Day 15)
On the latter part of an extended fast, you can experience enhanced energy, clear-mindedness and feel better than you have felt since childhood. On the downside, old injuries may become irritated and painful. This is a result of the body's increased ability to heal during fasting. If you had broken your arm 10 years before, there is scar tissue around the break. At the time of the break, the body's ability to heal was directly related to lifestyle. If you lived on a junk-food diet, the body's natural healing ability was compromised.

During fasting, the body's healing process is at optimum efficiency. As the body scours for dead or damaged tissue, the lymphocytes enter the older, damaged tissue secreting substances to dissolve the damaged cells. These substances irritate the nerves in the surrounding region and cause a reoccurrence of aches from previously injured areas that may have disappeared years earlier. The pain is good as the body is completing the healing process. The muscles may become tight and sore due to toxin irritation. The legs can be the worst affected, as toxins accumulate in the legs. Cankers are common in this stage due to the excessive bacteria in the mouth. Daily gargling with salt and water will prevent or heal cankers.

Stage 4 (Day 16 to Day 30)
The body is completely adapted to the fasting process. There is more energy and clarity of mind. Cleansing periods can be short with many days of feeling good in between. There are days when the tongue is pink and the breath is fresh. The healing work of the organs is being completed. After the detoxification mechanisms have removed the causative agent or render it harmless, the body works at maximum capacity in tissue proliferation to replace damaged tissue. While a short fast will reduce the symptoms, a longer fast can completely heal. Homeostatic balance is at optimum levels. The lymphatic system is clean except for a rare discharge of mucus through the nose or throat. After day 20, the mind is affected. Heightened clarity and emotional balance are felt at this time. Memory and concentration improve.

Stage 5 (Breaking the Fast)
The sticky, toxic, mucoid coating on the intestinal wall is loose, and the first meal frees it from the intestinal wall. Toxins enter the blood through the colon. The gallbladder dumps its waste in a heavy discharge of bile. This can cause an instant bowel movement upon eating followed by intense diarrhea. If the symptoms are too uncomfortable, an enema will help.

*NOTE: The only thing not in line with the MC/Lemonade Diet is McGregor's recommended use of enemas; do the SWF instead, it's much gentler and washes the entire digestive tract from top to bottom, not just the large bowel.

These detox symptoms were part of an article by Mr. Tom McGregor and can be found in their entirety, including the brief intoduction by clicking on: The Different Juice Fasting Stages of Detoxification.

Peter Glickman (present day advocate of the MC) has grouped the detox symptoms that he and others have had into five groups:

  1. Cravings — Only 1 person in 4 experiences any hunger on this cleanse and drinking more lemonade or water usually handles that. I have, however, observed that people on the cleanse crave what they are detoxifying. Proof that this is true is that the cravings usually go away the next morning with bowel movements. You can crave anything when detoxifying, but most likely you will experience cravings for the most toxic foods, such as pizza, hamburgers, barbeque ribs, etc. The way to tell if it's a craving rather than true hunger is to imagine sitting down to a large, green salad. If that inspires you, you're hungary. If all you want is pizza; if that is all you can think about; then, you're experiencing a craving.
  2. Tiredness — When your body fights toxins, whether from detoxifying or an infection, it diverts energy into healing and away from the energy you use to work and play. On my first 20 day cleanse, I was not tired except on the fifteenth day. The next morning, I experienced heat in my bowel movements, an indication that acidic toxins were being eliminated. I also lost all sense of tiredness after that morning's eliminations.
  3. Irritability — This includes boredom and the desire to "just chew something solid".
  4. Physical aches, pains, nausea, vomiting, etc. — These are the most severe reactions and only occur where a person is severely toxic, only a small percentage of people experience these. Fortunately, these have gone away after only a day or two in every case I have heard about.
  5. Hot bowel movements — Your body wastes are acidic and when you eliminate the most toxic ones, they actually feel anywhere from warm to burning. This experience is very infrequent, but worth mentioning because hot bowel movements after a day of heavy detox symptoms will confirm that you just eliminated significant toxins.

Hi all,

I started the MC today and Im doing pretty good. I had a headache in the afternoon and took a few excedrin when it started getting worse and that seemed to clear it up. I have been craving food but not as badly as I thought I would. I have decided not to do the salt water flush but I will be taking the laxative tea. Is that still okay?

Looking forward to cleaning my insides and losing a few pounds while Im at it.

Any recommendations for a novice?

The eliminations produced by the SWF greatly reduce detox symptoms, have you decided not to do it with out first trying? And if so, why?

Hi there - I just started the master cleanse as well! It is my first time, so it is nice to see that someone is in the same boat! I am on my second day, and doing good, other than being a little crabby. I will say you are not missing out on the saltwater flush...it is NASTY! It almost came up today, but I have been plugging my nose while guzzling it and that seems to help. I will say, I'm nervous to see what I've been carrying around all this time...Anyway, good luck and I'll talk with you again I'm sure!!

Thanks for the support. I have lost 3 lbs so far and the hungar pangs are slowly going away. I am tired and going to work takes a little more ocncerntration right now but I hoping that will change as I move along. Im still not into drinking the SWF but the laxative tea seems to work okay for now. I do think that if I do not see BM once everyday or everyother day.

Question for those of you who have done this before. Should I be having a BM everyday or everyother day? Does the tiredness go away, and do any of you have some tricks to keep more alert and concentrating when at work. Im thinking this will go away soon but I thought no harm in asking.

You should be having several eliminations every day; when you do, the tiredness will likely subside and you will feel more energetic. You are probably releasing stored toxins into your system faster than you are eliminating them.

The herbal laxative tea and the SWF work in conjunction with each other, the herbal laxative tea loosens and the salt water washes the nasty stuff out. Neither one by itself is quite as effective.

Quote:

Stanley Burroughs says in his booklet; “It is quite advisable to take the herb laxative tea at night to loosen, then the salt water each morning to wash it out. If for some reason the salt water cannot be taken in the morning, then the herb laxative tea must be taken night and morning.”

Peter Glickman (modern day authority on the MC) comments: However, I believe that (the herb laxative tea in the morning) isn’t as good as doing the salt water flush.”

Well I did the lemonade diet for 1 week but am thinking I must not have done it correct as I am not have several eliminations every day. Infact I only have one or two every few days. This first time I did not do the SWF so Im thinking this next time I will do it and make sure all the dosing is correct. Also I used grade A maple syrup because the grocery store did not carry grade B.
This time I will try the salt water flush again and see if I can stomach it, if not I will make sure my dosing is correct. Anybody have some advise for me and what I could do better, and where I can find the right maple syrup.

You can order your Maple Syrup on the MC/Products page.
If you must use grade A, make sure it's organic and "Dark Amber". See the following thread: Grade B Maple Syrup - and what about Grade C?

Not recommended, but if the headaches are so severe that it comes down to you choosing Excedrin or breaking the cleanse, in that case I'd say go with the Excedrin. I would only take it as often as absolutely needed and even then take the minimum effective dose possible.

Vegeman ,

Thanx for all the adivse and helpful sites. I do have one more question though. I already take a prescription medication daily, does this interfere with the cleanse and if im already taking that will it matter that I take an excedrin if I need to? Just trying to get it right and do it right

I don't believe that any non-prescription pain medicine is good while on the cleanse, and I would take it only if it's absolutely necessary and even then, only the minimum dose to help you manage the pain.

I have no idea what the prescription drug you're taking is and can't give an opinion on whether it interferes with the cleansing process.

"butt pee", as we affectionately call it is common, no reason for concern. I don't think epsom salts are recommended, but instead un-iodized sea salt. Epsom salts are somewhat abrasive on the colon and should not be used repeatedly, while the sea salt can be used repeatedly without concern.
