If you click on vegeman you will be led to my profile which gives a bit of information about me.
I have been doing this cleanse since 1970 when I tried it for the first time in order to rid myself of severe allergies and assorted other health problems and was astounded by the results. My health problems (including the allergies) ceased and I quickly returned to a state of optimal health. I've been cleansing regularly ever since; not quite as often in the early years but now I do the MC two to three times a year, with a few three day (mini-cleanses) in between.
I am a "lacto-ovo" vegetarian and eat mostly fruit and veggies, very little dairy, and eggs only occasionally. I avoid refined sugars and processed oils as much as possible and only eat concentrated protein foods a few times a week. I remain active by facilitating two hiking clubs and I do hill and mountain hiking a couple times a week. Generally between two to eight miles, which keeps me in good shape.
My main concern at this point in my life is true spiritual enquiry, in other words, realizing who I really am. We all assume we know who we are, but do we really? Or is it just what has been reflected back to us from others that establishes our sense of self? And if it's not clear to me who I am, what difference does it matter what beliefs I hold dear? I also try to focus on what we all have in common rather than what separates us.
Another concern I have is how the world views me as an American. I was raised to believe my country acted like a "big brother" by holding out a helping hand to those countries less fortunate. Now that has changed, and it seems "big brother" has taken on a new and different role, to occupy and control others, which makes me ashamed to be an American. I'm afraid greed and power now has way to much influence in our government and its policies.
I think this may be enough for now since I am drifting off-topic for this forum.

Yes, I actively inform everyone I know about the corruption of our government every chance I get. Voting hasn't helped, the representatives we've elected refuse to represent those who voted for them, they instead represent the power of those who have a lot of money and make large campaign contributions. Our "two party system" is like two heads on the same monster to me.
If you wish we could continue this conversation by email since it's off topic for this message board. Let me know and I will email you my address.

This was an excellent post asking questions I had personally wondered myself as I lurked and got to know a little more about the man behind "vegeman" title. Hehe
Except for the whole "sorry women" part. What? Um.. Why?
Anyway, it was refreshing getting to know the deeper aspects, like "knowing oneself" and the struggles of inner spirituality. Very deeply layered things to introspect about. I can understand how you would worry over how people see you as an American man (as apparently I must show concern for how people see my as a woman?) since it's a dramatic shift going from respecting your country's standards to seeing it betray your very moralistic respect. I went through the same phase myself and now look back only to cringe, but it feels nice having someone who understands, so it's not so bad putting it in perspective.
I suppose constantly changing, shifting and growing is part of the life's process. Glad to see a fragment of your shared transformation. Thanks for sharing.
