I hope you all don't mind me responding to your comments. What you've expressed has become a worldwide problem, and the blame does not rest entirely on your shoulders.

A little research shows that food addiction is similar to drug and alcohol addiction.  Very often for a food addict, processed foods, refined sugars, factory farmed meats and saturated/trans fats become what alcohol is to the alcoholic, or cocaine to the cocaine addict.

When eating food in these groups, the addict sets the phenomenon of "craving" into motion.  Like the drug addict, the food addict experiences withdrawal when attempting to cut down on the foods that trigger cravings.  They can experience both physical and emotional withdrawal such as tremors, cramps, depression, teary periods and even self-hatred.

Food manufacturers have done an exquisite job of recognizing and tapping into our cravings, using persuasive ads and alluring packaging to keep their products tumbling into our shopping carts. These foods contain chemical compounds that stimulate the brain's secretion of opiate-like, "feel-good" chemicals like dopamine, which drive our cravings for them.

The dependence on these "trigger" foods can be overcome by staying on the MC/Lemonade Diet for 10 days or more.  Once the addictive substances are out of the body, the physical cravings leave and the struggle isn't as bad as it once was. These physical cravings do subside and you will have a second chance; and a choice whether to reintroduce the foods that caused the problems in the first place back into your diet. The emotional and mental cravings will still be lurking in the background, but with the establishment of a healthy diet and a lifestyle committed to changing old habits they will eventually be overcome.

I intend this post to be some encouragement for those of you who face these challenges in respect to your relationship with foods, and wish that you succeed with the Master Cleanse program and triumph over all obstacles in your chosen path to well-being.

Thanks! I agree.  I have already started thinking and planning about what kinds of food I want to put in to my body when I am done with this cleanse.  It's going to be tough, but I am determined to make healthier choices and I really want to think it through when I put something in to my mouth.  I am excited for the changes and know they will help me out alot!

Your informed choices will greatly improve your health, most people are in the dark and trust the food industry to tell them what is good or not. Do your own research, investigate the pitfalls and the benefits of all approaches. The internet search engines are great for this.

Let me know if I can be of any help.

Yes I admit that I do have a food addiction/obsession.  It's the one thing I think about day and night.  I've had several addictions before such as smoking, heavy painkillers, etc.  I was able to overcome those addictions with shear determination, but I must say, my food addiction is amongst the worst!  At times I feel like it's the only comfort I have or the only thing that makes me happy.  But I am glad I found this forum, hopefully by expressing myself freely and sharing my experiences with others we could overcome this ADDICTION once and for all.

The Master Cleanse will be an enormous help to "kick-start" a new lifestyle of eating properly and healthy. Periodic an/or repeated cleanses keep you on track and bring you back when you slip up or start to slide back into those old habits.

Food addiction is hard to break, and in addition to the info. in the post that started this thread, there are other issues to deal with. Food is socially acceptable and people reward themselves for almost every imaginable occasion by indulging. We are encouraged (at least here in the US) to show how much we appreciate a meal by the amount we eat. We are taught to "clean up our plates" at every meal. Fast foods are all too convenient in this busy world, but even if we go to a decent sit down restaurant, we can almost guarantee we will be over served; with the average main course totaling around 1000 calories, and that does not count drinks, salad, appetizers or desert.

I have a number of music videos from the early 70's and it's amazing, but you can't find any obese people in the audiences; check out the average concert audience today! This is what is happening to America. Let's get ourselves right and then help others to get a grip!

Sorry to go on so, but I'm passionate about this.

I really enjoy hearing you express your confidence and unshaken belief in the MC.  Although many would say that it's not medically certified, but it's very reassuring to have someone put so much faith into a system that they truly believe will enhance the lives of others.  Thank-you!

I was wondering, is it healthy to go back on the MC right after a slip?  I mean the reason I am asking is because like I said in my own personal post, I've slipped a few times and had to start all over again.  So would that affect my health?  My greatest concerns are with the laxatives, I mean if you're on them for too long, wouldn't your body become dependant on them?  And are they good for you?

I have never personally met anyone who argues against the Master Cleanse because it's not "medically certified" who has tried it for 10 days.

It's not medically certified because it is not for everyone. Many (or most) medical "practitioners" will also tell you the body naturally cleanses itself of dangerous toxins, and that other type of cleansing, of any sort, is not needed or recommended. Makes you wonder why Americans are sicker, fatter and more dependent on the medical community than ever before in their history?

About the use of laxatives while cleansing: When you are cleansing there is little to trigger the action of peristalsis, thus the need for the herbal laxative tea. Normally food would serve this function. People who take laxatives while eating regularly (usually constipation is the reason) will, after a time, develop a dependency. Once the cleanse is broken the reintroduction of solid food will naturally take the place of the tea in producing the peristaltic action (producing smooth muscle contractions) and the tea will no longer be needed.

I see.  Thanks for the explanation.  Well I have just completed my first day on the MC yesterday and I am feeling great!  Every time I think of cheating, I'd defer the idea by remember how horrible it made me felt when I cheated and felt like a complete failure.  On top of that, I also bring myself back to the feeling of my tummy hurting after stuffing myself and I'd tell myself, it's not worth it!

I do find this site to be very helpful in the process.  It's nice to be able to express my thoughts and obstacles and recieve an informative response in return.  Thanks a million!

Hey all, starting the cleanse in two days..Tues, July 8th.
It is good to know there are other food addicts on this cleanse. That is the biggest thing I am nervous about. When I just see or smell food, I always feel an overwhelming desire to eat. I am hoping that I will be able to fight off the extreme cravings I will be having during this cleanse. Furthermore i hope that that this cleanse will help get rid of some of those awful cravings forever!

Hey everyone. I just found this by chance. But anyway. I am on my 2nd day and I absolutely love it. I wanted to start cleansing because of 2 reasons...helping me through bulimia and starting new and becoming a vegan. Though i'm only on day 2, I feel great and food doesn't seem to control me anymore. It's just the HABIT of eating that gnaws at me. I think I'll be posting here a lot, just because. Mmmmk.

this addiction to food post makes me think of Super Size Me.  Morgan Spurlock became so addicted to McDonald's and it caused so much harm to his body in only a month!  His girlfriend put him on a vegan diet afterwards to cleanse his body out.  The Cleanse might have made him catatonic!

Food addiction seriously is a problem.  Fortunately, there's something we can do to fight against it.  Go on the cleanse - and enjoy organic, eco-conscious food.

@elizabeth-Yeah super size me was insane!
On day 2 of the cleanse and I can already tell I am not as dependant on food, in 2 days! Crazy...
I am also a food addict and my brain is constantly thinking what my next meal will be... it makes me sick to think food had that kind of control over me. Being on the cleanse makes you realize a lot of stuff like that I guess. For example me and my boyfriend got movies from redbox last night and I was thinking EVERYTIME we get movies from redbox we also get ice cream... a couple times a week we would get a movie and I would polish off a pint of ben & jerrys! I associate doing different acitivites with food... nuts.

Habitual eating habits are hard to break, almost all addictions are based on some sort of association and this is often below the radar of our conscious attention. Food often reinforces our comfort zones and makes us feel good, so when we want to relax or break free of stress we often grab a bite to eat.

One of the best practices to break this trend is the Buddhist practice of "Mindfullness" or conscious attention. Bringing "Mindfulness" into play before we put anything in our mouths helps us to to learn to attune to our bodies and distinguish between real physical hunger (where your stomach is rumbling and you physically need to eat) and psychological hunger (where cues such as emotions, settings, social occasions and sights and smells of food encourage you to eat). Physical hunger is a useful and appropriate cue to eat - psychological hunger is not.

"Mindfulness" also enables us to eat much slower, actually savoring and thoroughly enjoying each bite of food. Eating in this manner gives our brain time to register the sense of fullness. It is a proven fact that it takes about 20 - 30 minutes for our brains to register this sense of fullness, no matter how much we put in our stomachs during that time. People who eat slowly and mindfully are much less likely to overeat.

Quote:
"Mindfulness is the missing link when it comes to healthy eating," says Ellie Krieger, a New York City-based registered dietitian and host of the Food Network's "Healthy Appetite." For lasting change, don't try to overhaul your approach overnight. Start gradually, focusing on the following common pitfalls; then work on your own weak spots. Throughout, be gentle with yourself. In time, you may see improvements in not only your diet but also your overall sense of well-being. "Practicing consciousness about food does more than help you eat better," says Taylor. "It's a skill that has a way of spilling out into other areas of life."

Thank you for referring me to this forum section.. I really found it helpful. I am very strong and have been on such a great health regime for over 2 yrs- I practice hot yoga as well and know about 'bull dog determination..  " the instructors remind us.  not sure why I caved to sugar- but I see it really is a struggle for many... but- all we need to do is tell ourselves we can.. then we must. I have a whole new attitude about it and going to start my cleanse Monday Oct 3. I am looking forward to it. I did not prepare for it the last time.
Thank you vegeman...

Upwards we go...
