TIPS FOR AFTER THE MC!

7 Things To Do To Boost Your Metabolic Rate

Build Muscle Mass Strength training builds lean muscle tissue, which burns more calories at work or at rest, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The more lean muscle you have, the faster your metabolism will be. How do you start strength training? Try some push-ups, or a few squats or lunges. Use 5 lb. free weights to perform simple biceps curls or triceps pulls. Do these exercises three to four times per week, and you'll soon see a boost in your metabolism as well as an improvement in your physique.

  1. Do Not Skip Meals or Drastically Reduce Your Caloric Intake If your body senses that food is in short supply, it will slow your metabolism to conserve energy. Over time, the result is that when you do eat (even if you consume the same foods as always) your body will be slower to use the calories as fuel, thus creating a backlog of unwanted pounds. A good strategy is to cut your caloric intake by no more than 500 calories per day and never less than 1200 calories total each day. Once you determine your goal for calorie consumption, divide those calories into 6 different small meals/snacks through out the day.

  2. Increase the Amount of Protein in your Diet Most researchers agree that protein helps to stabilize the secretion of insulin into your blood stream, a process that can affect metabolism. The average person would benefit from protein intake at a minimum of 70 grams or higher each day.

  3. Aerobic Workout 3 Days a Week Even though exercise doesn't affect your RMR, the extra calories you burn could add up to an additional 1-2 pounds of weight loss per month.

  4. Increase Movement in Daily Lifestyle The more you move, the more you burn! You can actually make a significant addition to the number of calories you burn each day by relatively minor changes in lifestyle. This can be as simple as taking the stairs instead of the elevator; park a distance from the mall or office; window-shop with your best friend rather than sit over coffee; walk the dog instead of just let him out; do a little gardening or clean house while you talk on the phone. Making these types of changes for just 20 minutes of your day will cause you to burn an additional 100 calories per day or an additional pound per month. Making more of these changes can help you burn as much as an additional 1,000 calories per day!

  5. Go For an Evening Walk Although exercising any time is good for you, evening activity may be particularly beneficial. Many people's metabolism slows down toward the end of the day. Thirty minutes of aerobic activity before dinner increases your metabolic rate and may keep it elevated for another two or three hours. What that means for you: those dinner calories have less of a chance to take up permanent residence on your hips!

  6. Get Adequate Sleep As funny as it sounds, sleep deprivation may make you fat and not just because you're susceptible to cases of the late-night munchies. According to researchers at the University of Chicago, women who got less than four hours of sleep per night had a slower metabolism than those who slept for a full eight hours.

What about supplements? Diet supplements that claim to increase your metabolism have flooded the marketplace. Our advice is to beware. Stimulants (such as caffeine, ephedrine, nicotine, and others) have not been clinically proven to increase metabolic rates. It may be that they stimulate a person to simply be more active, which then burns more calories. Some of these products can be harmful and are not recommend. Hot peppers (specifically jalapeno and cayenne) may increase your body's release of stress hormones such as adrenaline, and may stimulate you to burn more calories. Green tea drinkers were shown to burn an extra 70 calories per day in a recent study. Researchers believe the increase is caused by antioxidants known as catechins.

Maintaining your weight diet suggestion menu to follow in the next few days, working on it!

Thank you so much for this post. My concern is that the majority of people doing this cleanse, is doing it for weight loss. That's fine, but after you lose the weight how do you keep it off. How about just plain ole good health. We're way to concerned with fitting into a size we'll probably never see again for so many other reasons other than weight. The important thing is to be healthy and live well.

I am on the 3rd day and happy to have run across this post regarding metabolic rate. If I am drinking 6 - 10 glasses of 'lemonade' per day, I am getting what...maybe 100 calories? 200? This surely means my system is eating my muscle tissue, not just fat. Which means after I come off of this cleanse I'll gain weight faster due to now having less active tissue. Also, while on the diet, I am sure my metabolism slows in response to not enough calories. Help! What is your answer to this?

Hi,

I started this diet 2 days ago and don't think i am going to make it much longer.  I am doing it for the cleanse, not to lose weight.  I am too skinny as it is and run about 40-50 miles a week.  I just thought it would be could to clean out my system.  The problems I have experienced are I don't think i can get enought calories with this diet.  I feel like my body is shutting down.  I can't produce any body heat and I am freezing all the time.  Also I feel like I can't think straight, my brain just doesn't have the calories to burn to operate 100%.  I can't stand the lemonade w/cayenne, it just makes me nauseous, but i have been forcing myself to stay with it hoping that it gets better.  I get done from work and just don't have the energy to go for runs like normal and when i do they feel very lethargic.  Any suggestions?  does it get better? or should i get some nutrition in my body?

thanks

Jakester: No likey the cayenne? I hear you can get it in tablet form, check with local hfs! Good luck! -- I started w/chapped lips and either the cayenne/lemon irritated my lower lip - yay pouty lips! Until I brushed my teeth and OW it BURNED! I checked magnifying mirror, had teeny little blisters on the inside of my lip! Fixed it w/vaseline before drinking. No more Angelina lips... Good luck to you!

Dear Diet Guru,
HELP!!! What should I do to boost my Metabolic Rate while on the cleanse?  I have been on the two-part cleanses you buy at the HFS so I'm doing it for health, but I really want to lose the weight.  I know about muscle mass and resting calorie burn but I really want to lose 2 lbs a day like others.  I don't drink more than 6 glasses a day and only use 1T. MS in each glass.  HELP!!!!!

Thanks for any advice.

I have done the lemonade diet a couple of times in the past and am wanting to do it again but I have a few concerns this time around.  The first being that I am now hypoglycemic, perhaps I was when I did it before but after reading some of these posts in that regard I'm a little concerned to begin again with the maple syrup.  I am now working full time and cannot afford to be sick!  I am familiar with Agave nectar...do I just sub out the maple syrup in equal amounts and what was I reading about cinnamon instead of cayenne?

Secondly, I had the luxury in the past of not having to be anywhere if I was feeling 'ill', now I have to get up at 4:30 a.m. to go to work!  I'm a little concerned about the 'cleansing part' of the diet!  Can anyone offer me any suggestions on how to best handle that part......you know.....what happens when you drink all that salt water and you now have somewhere to be???

I'd like to start tomorrow....if I hear back as I am off Sunday and Monday....which would be a very good time to begin!

Thanks!

Ok so here I am at day three or so, haven't really been counting because that seems to speed up the time.  Going good and down EIGHT POUNDS!  Feeling really good though.  Lots of energy!  I think the weight and the food was holding me down in a way and love the cleanse so far.  I think this is going to be the best Valentines Day in a while....
